Tilem’s Design, Njana Tilem Gallery, Mas, Bali

Mid- to late-20th century | Ebony Wood | Signed Base

HIGH QUALITY ART - not tourist grade!

From the revered woodcarving traditions of Mas, Bali comes this finely detailed sculpture by Tilem’s Design, affiliated with the Njana Tilem Gallery—an institution synonymous with the artistic legacy of master sculptor Ida Bagus Tilem.

This piece captures the quiet dignity of daily life: a Balinese woman in motion, gracefully bent as she gathers rice, with fluid lines that mirror the natural grain of the wood itself. Carved from Makassar ebony, the sculpture showcases rich striations in tones of deep umber, charcoal, and warm russet. The carving is tactile and fluid—note the precision in her fingers, the movement in her sarong, the delicately gathered fish at her feet. Every detail suggests both reverence for the figure and a celebration of the wood’s natural beauty.

Carved into the base is the mark of Njana Tilem Gallery – Mas, Bali – Tilem’s Design, placing this firmly in the lineage of high-quality Balinese studio wood sculpture. I contacted the studio and confirmed that the artist that made this was named Made Rema and it was finished in approximately 1982. They also confirmed the material.

This is a statement piece for collectors of Southeast Asian folk art, lovers of natural materials, or anyone drawn to the elegance of artisan woodwork. It bridges traditional craft with refined modern interiors—equally striking on a pedestal, shelf, or in a curated vignette.
